New Regulator Announced

As previously reported, on 15 August 2011 Vietnam's Ministry of Information and Communications announced the formation of a new regulatory body, the Viet Nam Telecommunications Authority (VNTA). This new body brings together the staff and responsibilities of two former agencies under MIC, the Department of Telecommunications and the Authority of Information and Communications Technology Quality Control (ICTQC) make up one body responsible for regulation as well as policy-making.

VNTA's activities fall broadly into these categories:

  • supervising the fulfilment of commitments of telecommunications operators and telecommunication services providers
  • regulating telecommunications infrastructure, interconnection, telecommunications tariff, promotion, and quality of services
  • allocating telecommunications numbers
  • dealing with disputes settlement related to telecommunications issues among telecommunications operators and services providers

 With these organizational changes, further changes in regulatory requirements for products destined for Vietnam may be coming. Look for future updates here.
